Placer Dome, Porgera, Papua New Guinea & Sydney Australia
Chief Geologist 1992 – 1996
During the period I was employed, I was part of the team that developed the open pit operations above the underground mine workings. I subsequently took over as the project lead on all site geological activities, which included, mine site and regional exploration as well as open pit and underground production geology. During this time a significant amount of exploration drilling was undertaken and as a result resources and reserves grew significantly. I managed a team of over a 100 expatriate and local staff with a significant budget as helicopter supported exploration was ongoing with multiple rigs operating and our teams were adding the projects inventories constantly. I was also responsible for monthly mine mill reconciliations, hiring and maintaining the geological workforce, training local and professional staff, localisation, community relations, liaising with the local university, and was a member of the onsite executive team who reported bi-monthly to a JV Committee. During this time the mine was producing over 1 million ounces of gold per annum, so there was a significant and ongoing requirement to discover additional resources for mill feed.
Dominion Mining, Mt Morgans, Western Australia
Senior Geologist 1988 – 1992
I was charged with maintaining a crew of professionals and samplers to delineate the ore body for mining. We had to define sufficient mining faces to deliver ore with sufficient grade to the mill, to maintain the Company’s guidance. This involved liaising with all site professionals to deliver on the agreed mine plan. The geology professionals mapped and delineated the orebody to minimise dilution during mining and the samplers were responsible for grade control sampling and delivery of collected grade control samples to offsite laboratories, in a meaningful timeframe. Our team won awards for our approaches which delivered reduced dilution and as a result, reduced costs.
Various Clients, Western Australia & New Zealand
Various Roles Prior to 1988
I worked in a number of roles with various groups, including in a laboratory, but the highlight was defining a ~9 g/t gold deposit in the lake at Nanine in Western Australia. A causeway was built to the island and the deposit was subsequently mined for the benefit of the owners. The proceeds allowed for increased and additional exploration efforts.
